Pomona Campus Climate Challenge is dedicated to raising awareness about climate change as it pertains to the Pomona College and Claremont community.

Our goal is to lead students, faculty, and the Pomona administration down a path to sustainability, energy awareness, and carbon neutrality through arranging on-campus events, hosting informational sessions, and transmitting to the school administration the ideas and concerns of the student body with regards to global warming-related issues.

Overall goals:

  • To educate students about climate change issues and solutions
  • To engage our peers in global warming solutions
  • To encourage and work closely with the school administration to adopt global warming solutions
  • To reduce Pomona’s greenhouse gas emissions to zero as quickly as possible

Pomona Campus Climate Challenge was started in August 2006 by Praween Dayananda (’07) and Ada Aroneanu (’07). Listed below are highlights from our first year:

  1. Carried out a first-ever detailed assessment of Pomona College’s greenhouse gas emissions with a greenhouse gas emissions inventory for the years 1999-2007. Wrote a detailed report with analysis and recommendations for reducing energy use and emissions. The report was used by the President’s Advisory Committee on Sustainability as its primary source of data for its first annual report to the President in May 2007. Many of the assessment’s recommendations were also adopted by the Committee in the year-end report to the President.
  2. Organized Pomona’ first comprehensive Dorm Energy Conservation Challenge in Nov 2006. Achieved an 8% reduction in electricity consumption compared to Nov 2005. Had 72% of residents taking the Pomona College Sustainability Pledge and won funding for a $2000 sustainability project for the dorms.
  3. Presented successfully a proposal to the President to purchase Renewable Energy Certificates for 10% of the dorms’ energy use.
  4. Worked with the administration to organize Step it Up, a Day of Climate Action, in April, which included participation from students and student groups from across the five colleges and residents of Claremont.
  5. Organized an Energy Conservation Challenge in the academic buildings - April 2007
  6. Screened a Global Warming Film Festival in October 2006

We meet every Wednesday at 10PM at the WU, everyone is welcome at the meetings throughout the year.
