Students from the Pomona Campus Climate Challenge have completed their study on greenhouse gas emissions at Pomona. The results of the study show that more than 88% of Pomona’s greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for the year 2005-2006 derived from energy use in buildings. Of the 88%, 47% is accounted for by electricity use for lighting and running electronic appliances and 41% by the use of natural gas use for space and water heating. Transportation related emissions from air travel, grounds, housekeeping and athletic department fleets accounted for 7% and refrigerant use emissions contributed 4%. Other sources of emissions include treatment of solid waste and application of fertilizer. There are also significant amounts of emissions from the consumption of food, however these emissions are not reported in this report. The students hope that the College will use this report as a stepping stone for making a more detailed assessment of its climate footprint and for taking concrete steps towards outlining and pursuing a comprehensive long-term action plan for achieving climate neutrality. As a result of the success of last semester’s drive, we have decided to extend a similar competition to you as a way of creating cohesion among all of those who use the school’s resources regarding what our sustainability goals as an institution should be.
In the coming days we will be distributing our “Faculty Sustainability Pledge”, a simple list of actions that you can take to help Pomona College become a more environmentally-friendly and sustainable institution. We ask that you check off at least five actions and attach the pledge to your door or another prominent place in order to remind yourself and those around you of the importance of sustainability on campus. We have attached it to this email so you can get started today!
During the month of April, we will be monitoring the energy usage of the various classroom and facilities buildings and comparing the levels recorded to those of previous Aprils. The building responsible for showing the most impressive reduction will be treated to a fantastic PARTY at the end of the month, so you have even more incentive to do all you can to help conserve!

The Day of Climate Action is being organized by the Campus Climate Challenge club at Pomona College–we are a student activist group that works with the student body, faculty, staff, and administration on climate change issues. Our event will bring together students of the Claremont Colleges (Pomona is one of the five colleges) as well as residents of the Claremont community. In addition to live music, we will be hosting speakers, organizing activities for children, and holding an exhibition of local environmental non-profits and their work, local green businesses and their products, and student research and activism dealing
with sustainability issues.
The purpose of the event is to raise awareness of climate change issues and to urge Congress to sign the toughest possible climate change legislation (to this end, we’ll have photo petitions and other fun politically-oriented activities). Of course, we are also hoping people will come away with a sense of how they can help fight climate change, whether through involvement in local organizations or by purchasing more sustainable products.
